Burning Tee Golf League

The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center is proud to call this special group of golfers friends and supporters.

Almost every Tuesday morning from April until October (rain or shine) you will find some, if not all, of the 132 members of the Burning Tee Golf League on the Penn State Golf Courses. These “old duffers,” as they call themselves, play 9 and 18 hole divisions. Skill levels vary, but their dedication to the game does not.

The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center is proud to call this special group of golfers friends. Our relationship began in 2007 when Burning Tee Golf League member, Don Hastings, joined The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center’s Golf Classic Committee. He brought with him a love of golf, a head full of good ideas, and a knack for organization.

At the Burning Tee’s annual meeting each year, Don invites League members to participate in what he calls the “Birdie Bucks Challenge.” He asks each player to join him in donating $1 for every score of one-stroke-under-par, or “birdie,” that a golfer makes during the season. Who would have guessed how a dollar-a-birdie would add up, but add up they did! In 2008, the first year of the challenge, the Burning Tee Golf League raised an astounding $3,100 in “birdie bucks” in support of The Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion at Mount Nittany Medical Center. In 2015, the “birdie bucks” challenge brought in an astonishing $6,300 for Mount Nittany Medical Center’s Golf Classic. Over the life of Burning Tee’s Birdie Bucks challenge, the league has raised $38,730 in support of The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center and the Golf Classic, demonstrating the power of participation.
