The Pink Zone recently presented a check for $105,000 to the Mount Nittany Health Foundation for their successful fundraising year. Although the Pink Zone raises funds all year round, the Penn State Lady Lions’ annual Pink Zone basketball game is likely the most well known event. This past year, the women took on Michigan in February at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Since 2010, Pink Zone has funded Mount Nittany Health with $586,000 for breast cancer care. Monies from Pink Zone are distributed to local organizations that provide breast cancer education, screening, treatment and research. Mount Nittany Medical Center continues to be the lead beneficiary, with other recipients including Penn State Cancer Institute, PA Breast Cancer Coalition, Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.
For the past four years, the funds have supported the breast health navigator position at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Angelique Cygan, RN, has been in this role since January 2014, and is responsible for removing barriers to care, and ensuring timely access, treatment and follow-up for patients dealing with breast cancer.
“It is so rewarding to help patients navigate through diagnosis and treatment,” says Cygan. “It’s even better when I can discuss the Pink Zone and the powerful support that it provides. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of both Mount Nittany Medical Center and the Pink Zone, my role as a breast health navigator helps to reassure patients I am here to help clear the path to their treatment needs.”
Now in its twelfth year, the Pink Zone is planning many exciting events to continue the fundraising momentum and celebrate more than a decade of service to the community.
