Mount Nittany Health is pleased to announce that Mount Nittany Medical Center has, for the third consecutive reporting period, received 5-stars, the highest rating given by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Five-Star Quality Rating System. With an overall national hospital average of 3 out of 5 stars, the Medical Center is now one of only 14 hospitals in PA with 5 stars, and one of just over 400 in the US with this achievement.

“Earning the CMS 5-star rating for three consecutive reporting periods is a tremendous achievement, and reflects the hard work and commitment of our physicians and staff who ensure that our community can rely on us for exceptional care,” said Nirmal Joshi, MD, FACP, chief medical officer, Mount Nittany Health.

The CMS ratings covers data from the previous year, and measures metrics in an average of seven areas, including mortality rates, readmission rates, safety of care, patient experience, efficient use of medical imaging, timeliness of care and effectiveness of care. Since 2016, the organization has published ratings of more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals, with the intent to help patients select a provider based on performance in the aforementioned metrics.

“This achievement is a direct reflection of our team’s dedication to excellence,” said Tiffany Cabibbo, DSc, MSN, RN, CENP, chief nursing officer, Mount Nittany Health. “This recognition underscores our commitment to consistently providing compassionate care of the highest quality to our community each and every day.”

In the last year, the Medical Center earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for quality care and patient safety. The lung cancer screening program and lung nodule program, located at the Medical Center, was designated a Screening Center of Excellence by Go2 Foundation for Lung Cancer and UPMC Health Plan for its ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening. The Medical Center also received three national quality awards for excellence in stroke care, including the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® program: Stroke Gold Plus award, Get With The Guidelines® program: Target: Stroke™ Elite, and Get With The Guidelines® program: Target: Type 2 DiabetesSM Honor Roll, for excellence in care given to stroke patients that also have type 2 diabetes. Among just one percent of hospitals in the country, the Medical Center’s inpatient diabetes care earned advanced certification for excellence in care from The Joint Commission, and additionally, Mount Nittany Physician Group Endocrinology was named an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

“Delivering quality healthcare to our region is the single most important contribution we make at Mount Nittany Health,” said Kristie Kaufman, MD, chair, Mount Nittany Medical Center Board of Trustees and Mount Nittany Physician Group provider. “This recognition further illustrates what a vital community resource we have in the Medical Center.”
