Val Coakley

For Val Coakley, it’s the one-on-one interaction with patients that makes her love her job with Mount Nittany Health.

As an orthopedic nurse case manager, Val is the primary liaison with patients having orthopedic surgery, such as a hip or knee replacement or spine surgery. She is the go-to person for information before surgery, during a hospital stay and once a patient is back home, when Val calls to make sure things are going smoothly.

“What I love best about my job are the relationships that I build because a lot of my patients come back. They’ll have one knee done, then they’ll have the other knee or hip done,” says Val. “My family always laughs because no matter where we go, someone will call out to me, ‘Hey Val!’ or say to their friend ‘That was my nurse!’ I take pride in that.”

During15 years working on the orthopedic wing, Val has gotten to know many patients. She also has been a regular donor to the Mount Nittany Health Foundation through payroll deduction, choosing to direct her giving to a new area or project each year.

“It’s important to give back to where you work—and I like to give my money to somewhere that I’m going to see what happens with it. I like to see things being done,” says Val. “This is more than just a job to me. I love Mount Nittany Medical Center. We’re a great hospital, and we do so much good here!”
