Remarkable care, remarkably close by
"Having providers with their qualifications right here kept me from having to travel hours for care, and really made a big difference."
– Doug Carroll
Mount Nittany Health Patient
Mount Nittany Health is proud and excited to announce plans for a brand-new Outpatient Center in Toftrees West. Toftrees is an integral part of our community and Mount Nittany Health’s Outpatient Center will be the first tenant in its new stage of growth and expansion.
Your support in action
Just as Toftrees is growing, Mount Nittany Health is also growing. The new Outpatient Center will expand access to a variety of medical and surgical services, including Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Neurology, Physical Therapy, Urology, General Surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat and Gastroenterology. In addition, the facility will feature lab, imaging and endoscopy. We are excited to bring a wide range of services together in this convenient, state-of-the art facility.
Funds from this year’s appeal will support our new rehabilitative Physical Therapy unit in the Outpatient Center, increasing access to care for all in our community who need it. The unit will feature:
- New state-of-the-art equipment
- New, expanded gym space
- Capacity for approximately 1,800 – 2,000 more total visits, and around 360 new patient evaluations annually
- Convenient co-location with orthopedics, lab and imaging
- Increased capacity to serve the many community members who are waiting for care
One patient's journey to health
Convenient access to medical specialties close to home can make all the difference in a patient’s journey to recovery, just ask Doug Carroll.
An avid skier, Doug’s life changed forever one fateful day on Montage Mountain in Scranton when a minor slip turned into a major accident. He wasn’t sure if he would ever ski, or even walk again.
“If it weren’t for the physicians, nurses and rehabilitative therapists at Mount Nittany Health,” said Doug, “I don’t know if I would even be able to walk today.”
Doug slipped and fell while inspecting a ski path from the top of the mountain, and the momentum of the fall prevented him from stopping. At the bottom, he collided with a light pole and suffered a collapsed lung, six broken ribs, a broken hip, a shattered pelvis, and a lacerated kidney.
Doug began his journey to recovery with Mount Nittany Health Orthopedics under the care of Dr. Kevin Wilson.
“Having providers with their qualifications right here kept me from having to travel hours for care, and really made a big difference,” he said.

Back to the future—doing what you love
After 12 weeks with Mount Nittany Health’s physical therapy team, Doug recovered enough to walk again. With continued hard work, we’re pleased to report he’s back on the slopes.
“Getting back to the top of the mountain was my crowning achievement,” Doug said.
