When Nittany Eye Associates’ co-founder, Fred Carlin, OD, joined the Mount Nittany Medical Center Golf Classic Committee in 1996, he did it to fill the seat of his best friend, the late pharmacist Don Farber.

What began as a way to honor his friend quickly turned into a passion. And to this day, Fred’s passion continues to grow for both the tournament and medical center.

“The hospital is the backbone and the center of our community,” says Fred. “It’s something we can be really proud of, and it just keeps getting stronger and stronger.”

As does the Golf Classic. From its early beginning in 1991 when $21,000 was raised for critical care beds to 2014’s total of $146,000 for the Healing Garden, the golf tournament’s reach and results have expanded, thanks to the committee’s hard work and the community’s generous response.

“Our committee is made up of people who care about the hospital. It’s always hard to ask people to give. But when you have a cause like the hospital and the projects that we’ve had, I think it makes it a lot easier,” said Fred.

For 10 of the 20 years Fred has been involved with the Golf Classic, he served as chair, raising nearly $1 million. “It’s especially gratifying when you are doing something you love so much,” said Fred. “It’s golf, it’s in a great community like State College, and it’s for a great hospital. It’s pretty impressive.”
